3 Ways Technology and AI Improves Telehealth for Both Patients and PTs
Telehealth is here to stay. Providers and patients have both become accustomed to telemedicine: so much so that post-pandemic, the expectation is that remote appointments will comprise some 30-40% of “visits” across all specialties — especially as regulations and reimbursement rules rapidly evolve to this new reality.1 However, the videoconferencing tools used to connect patients and providers are merely one part of the patient journey from scheduling to billing to final payment. Your Intake Workflows: Virtualized and Pumped Up on Data and AI
Collecting the right clinical data from patients before their telehealth appointment presents new challenges as practices adapt to virtual care. The combination of patient paperwork and pre-visit information a practice needs is often decided by schedulers and front desk staff based on a patient’s clinical needs. Collect Copays and Predict the Future
And finally there are copays. Collecting payment for health services to be rendered is a typical part of the intake process when in person. Unfortunately, Zoom and other video conferencing applications lack any ability to collect or process healthcare payments — much less having an AI-driven decision engine that can properly assess copays and deductibles to help practices modify patient behavior to maximize patient payments post-visit.
So with the rush to provide telehealth over the course of the pandemic, patient payments have been left by the wayside by many practices with the expectation that it can be collected through the regular billing process after insurance adjustments have been applied. Unfortunately, when practices fail to collect from their patients up front, they significantly decrease their chances of ever collecting any payment from their patients at all. Practices that rely on traditional billing processes and paper statements end up collecting only 40-50% of their patient payments post-visit.
